Director Jeff Wadlow (“Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare”) says it isn’t as much of a stretch as you might think. “The ‘be careful what you wish for’ notion is literally the premise of the show, ” he says, “and it’s at the core of every great horror movie. ” His “Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island, ” out Friday, takes its premise from the old ABC series, which ran from 1977 to 1984. Set on a mysterious tropical island, it features a dapper host named Mr. Roarke (Ricardo Montalbán), who escorted guests into their own tailor-made fantasies. “The original show was an anthology, ” Wadlow says. “It had guest stars who were the leads each week” — Maureen McCormick, Michelle Phillips, Roddy McDowall, Sonny Bono, Cesar Romero, Annette Funicello and Leslie Nielsen among them. “I loved the original show, ” says Wadlow, 43. “I remember it very well from when I was a kid. It had such a fun, mischievous energy. I love the way the writers played with the audience, the same way Mr. Roarke played with his guests. ” Ricardo Montalban and Herve Villechaize in “Fantasy Island, 1978-1984 (left) and Portia Doubleday and Lucy Hale in Blumhouse’s 2020 “Fantasy Island. ” Everett Collection; Christopher Moss The new film also features Roarke, now played by Michael Peña (“The Mule”), but does away with the best-known character, Tattoo ( Hervé Villechaize). “In the last two seasons, Mr. Roarke had a different assistant, ” Wadlow points out, so he felt at liberty to create a new assistant character too (played by Parisa Fitz-Henley). He does include other shout-outs to the series for fans: “The Colonial architecture, the seaplane. And we definitely have a character saying, ‘The plane! ’ ” — Tattoo’s famous catchphrase. Beyond that, Wadlow’s film begins with the series structure, but eventually goes rogue. “On the show, the storylines never crossed, ” says Wadlow, who also co-wrote the screenplay. “They would have two fantasies, and it was done in a way that they could be cut into half-hour episodes and sold that way. ” His movie, which stars Maggie Q, Lucy Hale, Portia Doubleday and Ryan Hansen, sees several separate stories eventually entwine — but not before each explores its own spin on twisted wish fulfillment. Maggie Q’s story is more of a ‘Butterfly Effect’ or ‘The Shining. ’ The Ryan Hansen story starts out almost ‘Weekend at Bernie’s, ’ but turns very quickly into a home invasion vibe, like the first ‘Purge. ’ ” Not surprisingly, Wadlow’s favorite TV episodes were the creepiest. “I really remember the one where Roddy McDowall played the devil, ” he says. “Also the one where a guest goes back to the Salem witch trials — the ones where the sinister underpinnings are more evident. ” He’s well aware that much of his movie’s audience won’t know it has a TV precedent. And that’s just fine. “You can see the movie without ever having heard of the show and enjoy it, ” he says. “But there are a bunch of Easter eggs, because we have such respect for the series. ” He says he’s proud to be working with classic ’70s source material, rather than rebooting something recent: “We’re not just saying, ‘Hey, remember that video game about a hedgehog? '”.

Just when you think they’ve rebooted everything, this horror film version of a once-popular series comes along. Credit... Christopher Moss/Sony Pictures/Columbia Pictures Fantasy Island Directed by Jeff Wadlow Adventure, Comedy, Horror PG-13 1h 50m This is a confusing time to be alive. Take this film, for instance. It’s a horror reboot and slight sendup of a television series that is best remembered by the parents of its target audience. “Fantasy Island” ran on ABC from 1977 to 1984; it was an anthology series in which guests at the title resort learned life lessons in down-market O. Henry scenarios demonstrating how careful one ought to be when wishing for things. The new “Fantasy Island, ” directed by Jeff Wadlow from a script he wrote with Jillian Jacobs and Christopher Roach, begins with the cry “The plane, the plane, ” made popular by the actor Hervé Villechaize on the show. But this island’s overseer, called Mr. Roarke as he was on television, is played by Michael Peña in a mild misterioso vibe, in contrast with the kitsch suavity of his original portrayer, Ricardo Montalbán. The fantasists have won a contest. Two bros want the beer-commercial party/orgy of their collegiate dreams; a single woman wants the mate she regretfully turned down; another single woman wants payback for school bullying; a dog-tagged dude wants to be a war hero. As they embark on their adventures, one anticipates multiple variants on the 1972 horror film “Tales From the Crypt. ” The film seems to pull imagery (like bleeding-eyed undead killers) from Euro-horror maestros like Jean Rollin and also cribs story elements from not one, but two different Tarkovsky classics (really). The sex and violence components, which are best served hot and lurid in exercises such as these, are here puréed into PG-13 pulp. This is all interesting from a pro-am cinema semiotics perspective, but none of it is in the least bit scary. This, really, is what happens when you take all the wrong lessons out of film school. Blumhouse's fantasy island movie online 2016. T he mysteries pile up in this schlock thriller faster than the bodies did in director Jeff Wadlow’s last film, Truth or Dare. But one question remains unsolved when the credits roll: who on earth is this film for? Based on a hit US TV show from the late 70s, it’s a reimagining that turns a campy fantasy into a darker, hard-to-define mixture of The Cabin in the Woods, Westworld and Lost. It’s a strange beast, never fully committing to jumpy horror, trippy sci-fi or soapy melodrama. Instead, it makes a clumsy attempt to do it all, taking itself far too seriously but with such goofy earnestness that it almost wins you over. The conceit remains roughly the same as in the original series: guests arrive at a tropical island expecting their fantasies to be realised, but at a price they might not be aware of. Pulling the strings is Mr Roarke (Michael Peña), a white-suited, wisdom-spewing enigma whose motivation is a mystery. His latest batch of guests have various issues to work through, from avenging a high-school bully to revisiting a failed romance. As they’re dragged further into the island’s supernatural recesses, they realise something might be afoot. As the latest offering from Blumhouse, the hit-making production company behind Get Out, Split, Happy Death Day and The Invisible Man, you’d be forgiven for expecting more scares. But Wadlow has something bigger in mind, and there’s something to admire in his ambitious agenda that stretches a modest $7m budget to laudable lengths. Yet the scenarios he concocts with co-writers Chris Roach and Jillian Jacobs aren’t quite as juicy as he seems to think they are, and the film unravels as it heads towards its spectacularly ridiculous finale. The ramped-up silliness clashes with the script’s unearned lurches into self-serious drama, with laughable late attempts to turn the film’s chesspiece characters into figures of empathy. It’s a fantasy scenario for no one. • Fantasy Island is released in the UK on 6 March.
